Life Purpose: A Radical View – Part One

Why should you know your life purpose?  What does your life purpose have to do with your business?  I am writing this three part series to answer these very questions.  I have entitled this “Life Purpose: A Radical View” because I recognize that not everyone will agree with my perspective on this topic.  I am approaching this topic from a decidedly spiritual viewpoint (specifcally a Biblical viewpoint) because it has given me such a deep peace and such clarity of mind.  When life and business gets chaotic, I remind myself of what is truly important and it straightens out my priorities and brings clarity back again.

I believe that every human being was created by a God of love to practice their unique traits, talents, and gifts throughout their life and business.  I believe that as we come to know our Creator – God, we can then come to know more about our purpose, our own traits, and how we can live out the very best life possible.  When I think about my life purpose, my mind goes right to “Why did God put me, in all my uniqueness, on this planet, at this time?”, which I then seek to answer by running through some of the following thoughts, questions, and answers.

Knowing that God put me here first and foremost to glorify Him and to be in a close, loving relationship with Him, my first priority is to read His letter to me (The Holy Bible) to get to know more about God’s character.  The question to be asked and answered here is: “What do I know about God’s traits that will show me His unique and loving plan for my own life?”

Once I’ve established a solid foundation of knowledge about God’s character, God’s plan for humankind, and the laws He set out in nature – it is then that I begin to ask what traits God has given to me that I may be a blessing to this world and a help to others in order to cooperate with God’s perfect and loving will.

Here is a very condensed list of some of God’s character traits as found in Scripture:
1.  God is love – the very essence of love – 1 John 4:16b “God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.” New International Version
2.  God is omnipotent (all powerful) – Luke 18:27 – “Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”
3.  God is omniscient (all knowing) – Isaiah 40:13-14 – “Who can fathom the Spirit[a] of the LORD,or instruct the LORD as his counselor? Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him, and who taught him the right way? Who was it that taught him knowledge, or showed him the path of understanding?”
4.  God is omnipresent (everywhere at all times) – Psalm 139:7-12 – “Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there;if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me, even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.”
5.  God is holy, without fault – 1 Peter 1:15 – “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do.”
6.  God is merciful – Hebrews 2:17 – “For this reason he had to be made like them,[a] fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.” (Referring to Jesus)
7.  God is eternal – Jeremiah 10:10a – “But the LORD is the true God;he is the living God, the eternal King.”
8.  God is self-sufficient and self-existent – Colossians 1:16 “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.”

In my next article I will show you how knowledge about God’s character will help you know more about yourself and your unique calling.  Keep watch for Life Purpose:  A Radical View – Part Two.  Blessings!
