Life Purpose: A Radical View – Part Two

In this three-part series on life purpose, I hope to get you thinking about why your Creator made you the way He did and why He put you on planet earth at this time.  You were born with unique strengths, personality traits, callings, and passions.  No one else on earth is exactly like you – you’re one of a kind.  In Part One – I wrote about God’s character traits as revealed to us through His letter to us (the Holy Bible) and in this article, I intend to show how knowing God better will give us a better understanding of our life purpose.

Now that we know God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent (as well as loving, merciful, and just – to name a few), it is also important to know that God tells us He created us to live in relationship with Him.  When we live in relationship to the all-loving, all-knowing, all-powerful Creator of the entire universe, it becomes clearly apparent that our lives have intrinsic value.  We are valuable because we exist, and we are valuable to our Creator.  Our first life purpose is to live in a personal, authentic, and intimate relationship with God.

If we know this is our number one purpose (to live in relationship with God), then it follows that we would live in relationship with God on His terms.  God tells us through Scripture that we cannot earn our way into relationship with Him, but that we can accept His free gift of grace through Jesus Christ.  You see, God had an awesome plan to redeem His creation, since He knew (due to his omniscience) that we would become wayward and turn our backs on our Creator (see Genesis 1 and 2).  He made a promise and followed through on that promise by sending Jesus Christ (God the Son) to earth to tell us of His love and demonstrate His love by His willingness to die on a cross (even though He had done nothing wrong) like a criminal, on our behalf.

When we truly begin to understand the depth of His love for us, His creation, then we begin to understand how important it is to use our gifts and talents to help others, to support others, to love others through our life, our relationships and our business/career.  So, there it is – our first purpose is to be in relationship with a loving God, our second purpose is to be in loving relationships with our fellow human-kind.

How you express this loving support of your fellow man and womankind is where your unique gifts, personality and passions come in to play.  Some folks may be naturally gifted at counseling others, or able to provide gadgets that make life a little easier, while others may be good at planning events or leading others in exercise to improve their health.  What do you think God has put in your heart to do with your life while you are here on planet earth?  Since this is a blog article – I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

The third article will give a couple of real-life examples of people who are living out their life purpose through their work and their relationships.  I look forward to giving you some encouragement and inspiration through these examples.
